Hornets Travel To Lexington To Face No. 21 Washington And Lee

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball program hits the road this weekend for its second-to-last away matchup of the regular season to take on No. 21 Washington and Lee on Saturday, February 8 at 4 p.m.

The Hornets (7-12, 4-8) got a bounce-back victory against Averett earlier this week with a 73-45 finish. Lynchburg stormed in front early by hitting a spectacular 10-of-13 shots (.769 percent) from the field and four-of-seven (.571 percent) from 3-point range. A margin of 26-6 after 10 minutes allowed the Hornets to coast to victory, holding a lead of 16-or-more for the remainder of the outing. Junior guard Ashley Vandergrift led the way offensively by tying her career-high of 15 points, while all of Lynchburg's starters tallied at least eight points.

So far this season, junior forward Bree Spainhour leads the Hornets in scoring this season with an average 11.4 points per game and grabs a team-high 6.3 boards per affair. Senior guard Olivia Harris is the other Lynchburg performer averaging double-figure scoring with 11.2 points per game. Harris leads the squad in assists with 47 total dimes this season. As a squad, the Hornets are third in the conference in both 3-point field goal percentage (.288 percent) and opponent 3-point percentage (.249 percent), making 6.8 from beyond the arc per game.

Washington and Lee is the second in the ODAC in scoring, averaging 71.8 points per game. Junior Mary Schleusner is the second-highest scoring performer in the conference this season, averaging 19.6 points per competition, and grabs the most rebounds per game in the ODAC with 18.4 per affair. She also blocks 2.8 shots per game, which is the second-best mark in the conference.

Earlier this season, Lynchburg dropped the meeting against Washington and Lee, 66-47, on Nov. 23, 2024. Although each of the last five matchups have gone to the Generals, the Hornets have a slight edge in the series, 27-25, since 1995. The last Lynchburg victory came on March 9, 2021 with a 87-75 final in the ODAC championship game.

Following tomorrow's affair, the Hornets will return home for the team's Code Red game against Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, February 12 at 7 p.m.
