Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team cruised to two victories over Guilford on Saturday afternoon at Fox Field, winning game one by a 5-1 margin and game two with a 13-1 finish.
In game one, the No. 3 Hornets (17-3, 6-1) were powered by timely hitting and a few unearned runs. Ben Jones got things started in the third, tripling to center field and driving in
Logan Webster for the first run.
Later, in the fifth inning, Lynchburg extended its advantage after an error by Guilford's catcher allowed
Brandon Garcia to score.
Sean Pokorak added a double to left field, bringing home Jones for a 3-0 lead. A pair of RBI singles in the sixth from Webster and Garcia further stretched the advantage to 5-1. Lynchburg's pitching held firm, as
Tyler Kaltreider threw eight innings and
Conner Moore closed out in the ninth.
Game 2 featured an offensive explosion, as Lynchburg put up 12 runs, all but sealing the victory by the end of the fifth inning. Jones and Garcia both contributed early, with Jones' single bringing in Garcia for a 1-0 lead in the first.
Guilford briefly cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fifth, but Lynchburg responded with an onslaught of runs, including a 3-RBI double from
Gavin Collins, and a sacrifice fly from
Conner Moore. By the end of the fifth, Lynchburg led 11-1, capped off by a wild pitch that allowed Jones to score. A final RBI single from
Parker Cato in the sixth sealed the dominant win at 13-1.
Next up on the slate for the Hornets is a bout against Randolph-Macon at Fox Field on Tuesday, March 25 at 3 p.m.
