St. Mary's City, Md. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team rattled off eight straight goals in the first quarter and propelled to a 19-5 victory over St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon at JLR Stadium.
The No. 14 Hornets (5-4) earned another commanding victory with 19 goals following a 16-point triumph against Hampden-Sydney earlier this week. Lynchburg held the Seahawks scoreless for the beginning 18:11 of the contest and racked up eight goals in the process. Junior attack duo
Riley Hastings and
Finn Schmidt tallied five combined goals during the stretch, a hat trick from Hastings and two from Schmidt.
Following a St. Mary's goal for the first score of the second quarter, the Hornets added four more to the scoreboard before the end of the first half, including a nearly full-field shot from netminder
Andrew Miller that went crossbar-down for his first career goal. The Seahawks tallied one more before the end of the half and the squads went into the halftime intermission with Lynchburg up by double-digits, 12-2.
Out of the break, neither side scored until fifth year midfielder
Jake Rust broke the drought at the 5:22-mark off a dish from junior attackman
Spencer Vandenberg. Rust doubled up with a man-up goal just 1:24 later. Keegan Price of St. Mary's scored on an extra-man opportunity with less than one minute left in the third period.
Senior attack
Charlie Evans and
Carter Besz added five goals for the Hornets in the final 15 minute period to close out the contest while the Seahawks tallied two goals. Evans scored a hat trick all in the fourth quarter while Besz notched two goals.
Along with scoring a spectacular goal, Miller was a wall in the cage today. He stopped 16 shots and allowed just three goals all afternoon for a save percentage of .842 percent. His 16 saves represented a career-high effort.
Junior faceoff specialist
Riley Frankel had a huge impact at the X, winning 10 of his 16 attempts on the draw. As a squad, the Hornets were sucessful on 16-of-28 faceoff attempts in today's outing.
Lynchburg has wrapped up nonconference action for the regular season. The Hornets will take on the Guilford Quakers on Wednesday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C.
