Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team got a midweek victory over Pfeiffer with a 19-9 finish in seven innings on Tuesday afternoon at James C. Fox Field.
The Hornets (10-1) have propelled to 10 wins in the first 11 games of the season for the first time since the 2022 campaign. Lynchburg's impressive start has helped push them into the top five in NCAA Division III in the nation, currently sitting at No. 5.Â
Today, the Hornets looked very worthy of their top-five ranking. In the first inning, after allowing two runs to the Falcons, Lynchburg took advantage of a series of errors with aggressive baserunning.
Benton Jones stole second, and
Joe Munitz's steal of third set the stage for an unearned run as he scored on a third baseman error to get the Hornets on the board.
From there,
Sean Pokorak capitalized on an error by Pfeiffer's shortstop to score Jones and tie the game. That was followed by a wild pitch that allowed Pokorak to cross the plate for a 3-2 lead. A two-RBI single from
Ryder Warren brought in
Gavin Collins and
Joe Gordon, and
Logan Webster added another run with a single to center, pushing the lead to 6-2. Lynchburg scored twice more to finish the inning with an 8-2 advantage.
Pfeiffer threatened in the second and fourth innings, but Lynchburg's offensive depth proved too much to overcome. Warren's RBI single in the second, combined with
Jacob Henry's RBI, pushed the score to 10-3. Despite Pfeiffer's Wood's 3-RBI double in the fourth, Lynchburg answered with a barrage, including Webster's 2-RBI single and Munitz's RBI single to extend the lead to 15-6.
Lynchburg's offense didn't let up, tacking on four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by doubles from Webster and Munitz, bringing the final score to 19-9. Key statistics include Warren's 3 RBIs, Munitz's 2 runs and 2 RBIs, and Webster's 4 RBIs to fuel the dominant win.
Next up for the Hornets is the first conference competition of the season. The Hornets travel to Lexington, Va. to take on Washington and Lee for a double header on Saturday, March 8, starting at noon.
