No. 5 Lynchburg Sweeps Washington & Lee

Lexington, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team traveled to Washington and Lee for a double header on Saturday and snagged wins in both games, 3-1 and 17-4.

The No. 5 Hornets (12-1, 2-0) had their first conference competitions of the season and successfully claimed two victories against the Generals.  In the first game, Lynchburg jumped out to an early lead in the 4th inning. A wild pitch allowed Joe Munitz to score, and Benton Jones advanced to third. Ryder Warren then singled up the middle, bringing Jones home for a 2-0 lead.

Washington and Lee responded in the same inning with a single by Turner that scored DeWitte, making it 2-1. The Hornets added an insurance run in the 9th when Parker Cato doubled to center field to score Gavin Collins, securing a 3-1 victory.

Game two was an offensive explosion for Lynchburg, as they piled on runs early and often. Joe Gordon drove in the first run in the 1st with an RBI single, scoring Munitz. Washington and Lee responded with a sacrifice groundout to even the score at 1-1. The Hornets chimed back in the 2nd, scoring two more runs off a double by Logan Webster and a single by Brandon Garcia.

The game broke open in the 4th, when Lynchburg scored five runs, including an RBI single from Munitz and a throwing error that led to additional runs. The Hornets kept adding on in the 6th, scoring 9 runs, including multiple RBIs from Jones, Gordon, and Conner Moore. Despite a late push from Washington and Lee, including a two-RBI double from Turner, Lynchburg finished strong with a 17-4 win.

The Hornets' offense was relentless, with contributions from every part of the lineup, securing the sweep and dominating both games. Next up on the slate for the baseball team is a trip to Greensboro, N.C. to square off against Greensboro College on Tuesday, March 11 at 3 p.m.
