Greensboro, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team led from the fourth inning on until Greensboro scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Hornets, 6-5, on Tuesday evening at Ted Leonard Park.
The game saw both teams exchange leads multiple times, but Greensboro (9-6) ultimately pulled away in the final inning. No. 4 Lynchburg (12-2) got on the board first in the opening frame when
Benton Jones doubled to drive in
Brandon Garcia, giving the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Greensboro responded quickly in the bottom of the first with a double from Gardner that scored Berini, tying the game at 1-1.
In the third, Lynchburg regained the lead thanks to a sacrifice fly from
Joe Munitz, which allowed Garcia to score, putting the Hornets ahead, 2-1. But once again, Greensboro answered back in the bottom of the third with another RBI single from Gardner to bring Berini across the plate, evening the score at 2-2.
Lynchburg surged ahead in the fourth when
Jacob Henry blasted a two-run homer to score
Sean Pokorak, giving the Hornets a 4-2 lead. They added another run in the fifth as Pokorak's sacrifice fly brought Garcia home, making it 5-2.
Greensboro fought back in the sixth, narrowing the gap to 5-4 with a pair of RBI singles. Then, in the ninth, Scavone delivered the final blow, hitting a two-RBI single to give Greensboro a 6-5 lead, effectively ending the game. Lynchburg's pitching and defense couldn't hold off the late surge, and they ultimately fell short.
The baseball squad is right back into action tomorrow when it travels to Fayetteville, N.C. to take on Methodist on at 4 p.m.
