Lynchburg, Va. -- A barrage of 13 runs across the fifth and sixth innings allowed the University of Lynchburg to fly to a 15-3 victory in seven innings against Hampden-Sydney for the team's Code Red game on Wednesday afternoon.
The No. 2 Hornets (25-4, 12-2) increased their win streak to seven straight with today's assertive triumph. Lynchburg struck early, with
Sean Pokorak's RBI single in the first putting the Hornets on the board.
Brandon Garcia continued his hot streak with a pair of RBI singles—one in the second and a two-run knock in the fifth—finishing the day two-for-three with three RBI, three runs scored and two walks.
Lynchburg broke the game wide open with a five-run fifth inning. Pokorak added a sacrifice fly, and
Ryder Warren chipped in with an RBI single. Later,
Eric Hiett drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 7-0.
Despite a brief Hampden-Sydney surge in the sixth that saw them plate three runs—two of them unearned—Lynchburg responded with force. The Hornets erupted for eight more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Warren drew another RBI walk,
Tyler Howlett drove in two with a single, and Hiett kept the pressure on with an RBI knock of his own before stealing second as Howlett stole home.
Joe Munitz capped the rally with a two-run single to right, bringing the score to 15-3.
Munitz finished with four hits of five at bats, two RBI and three runs scored, while Hiett went two-for-two with three runs and 2 RBI. The Hornets showed patience as well, drawing nine walks and swiping six bases to fuel the offensive explosion.
The Hornets are right back on the field tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Newport News, Va. to take on Christopher Newport on Thursday, April 10 at 3 p.m.
