Lynchburg, Va. -- In a twilight showcase of the NCAA DIII Baseball Lynchburg Regional, the University of Lynchburg knocked two home and held off a late surge by Marymount University to secure a 7-6 victory on Friday, May 16 at Worthington Field.
After numerous delays and schedule changes due to weather conflicts, the Hornets and Saints squared off with first pitch beginning at 11:05 p.m. and played through the late night. Despite a three-run inning in the top of the ninth, Lynchburg kept the energy high to close out the game with a win.
Marymount struck first in the top of the third as Bobby Leitzel singled to send Quincy Via home. Trailing by one run entering the bottom of the fifth, the Hornets broke through in a major way. Senior
Bryce Demory launched an electric two-run homer to right center, driving in
Sean Pokorak and giving Lynchburg a 2-1 advantage. Moments later,
Logan Webster bombed it past the wall in left field, pushing the Hornets' lead to 3-1.
The Saints responded in the top of the sixth, tying the game at 3-3 with an RBI single from Jack McCarthy and a sacrifice fly from Jonathan McMath. Demory came through again in the bottom half of the sixth, ripping a two-run double to right field to bring home Pokorak and
Benton Jones. Demory finished the day two-for-four at the plate with four RBI, a homer, and a double.
Ryder Warren followed with an RBI single up the middle to plate Demory, giving Lynchburg a 6–3 cushion. The Hornets tacked on a key run in the seventh, as Jones singled through the left side to score
Joe Munitz, extending the edge to 7-3.
Marymount made things interesting in the ninth, capitalizing on a fielding error and a two-RBI single by Jordan Dickson to cut the deficit to just one. However,
Colin McGuire took the bump and struck out two consecutive batters to secure the narrow win.
Lynchburg is set to square off against Emory for its second contest of the NCAA Regional on Saturday, May 17 at 7 p.m. on Worthington Field. For more information, visit the
