Salem, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw against Rhodes on Sunday afternoon in the team's second game of the Roanoke Invitational.
Like the season opener, neither squad nudged in front during the first half. Rhodes fired eight of its 11 shots in the opening half, though both clubs failed to create an opportunity in the first ten minutes. The Lynx outshot the Hornets 11-6 in the contest.
Despite being held without a shot for the first 39 minutes, Lynchburg laced each of its three first-half offerings in the final six minutes of the period. One of the Hornets' best scoring opportunities arrived in the waning ticks as a through ball trickled past the Rhodes defenders, though Lynchburg could not direct the shot on frame.
While Lynchburg enjoyed just 38 percent of the possession in the first half, the Hornets' defense stifled the Rhodes attack and created more opportunities in the final 45 minutes. Junior midfielders Lauren Orner and Morgan Oliver each launched a shot inside the 18-yard box to begin the half, though neither team found the net.
Kate Shepherd posted her second clean sheet of the season, playing 90 minutes and making five saves. Lynchburg has now held its first two opponents scoreless in three consecutive seasons.
The nonconference affair marked Lynchburg's second game at Kerr Stadium on the campus of Roanoke College as the Hornets completed the weekend set of neutral-site games. Lynchburg will play one more neutral game this season when the team faces Emory in Charlotte, N.C. on Sunday, Sep. 21.
Lynchburg returns to Shellenberger Field for the team's home opener on Friday, Sep. 5 at 7:00 p.m. against New Jersey City. The match marks the return of the Shellenberger Classic: a four-team event held throughout the weekend. Roanoke and Meredith round out the bracket, as the Hornets will host Meredith on Saturday, Sep. 6.
