Lynchburg, Va. -- Ava Olson and Lauren Orner converted their first goals of the season as Lynchburg defeated New Jersey City 2-0 in the squad's first match of the Shellenberger Classic.
The Hornets tallied 15 shots while holding the Gothic Knights to just two chances. Lynchburg directed 11 opportunities on-frame and paired an assist with each goal of the Friday evening affair.
For the third consecutive game, the score remained scoreless through the first 45 minutes despite Lynchburg firing seven shots. The Hornets forced opposing goalkeeper Sophia Mannino to make eight saves in the losing effort.
The hometown squad provided quality chances in the first half, including a shot by Morgan Oliver that narrowly missed the top-right corner of the goal, but the Hornets waited until the 55th minute to open the scoring.
As a cross from Morgan Oliver swung into the box, a trio of Hornets waited to convert on the doorstep. Ava Olson connected to trickle the roller past the keeper and provide an advantage on the scoreboard.
Insurance arrived in the 73rd minute when Lauren Orner escorted a header beyond the gloves of Mannino for the second goal. Lune DenHartog sent a free kick into the box, and Orner found the separation to solidify the victory.
The Hornets have shut out their first three opponents of the season for the first time since 1999 when the team boasted a 16-game unbeaten run to begin the campaign.
Lynchburg improves to 2-0-1 and returns to action at the Shellenberger Classic on Saturday, Sep. 6 against Meredith at 7:00 p.m.Â
