Ashland, Va. -- With two second-half goals, including an 86th minute finish from
Chris Wiley, the University of Lynchburg men's soccer team earned its fifth consecutive win and first in conference play with a 2-1 result against Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, the Yellow Jackets struck first in the 52nd minute when Wiley Eubank converted a penalty kick to give the hosts a one-goal advantage. The Hornets responded quickly, leveling the score less than seven minutes later.
Evan Pask finished off a setup from
Matthew Viscuso in the 59th minute to make it 1-1. Around midfield, Viscuso sent a long ball that sailed over the head of a defender and hit Pask in stride down the right wing, allowing him to cruise into the box and fire it across the cage into the bottom right corner.
The match remained tense with both sides trading chances before Lynchburg found the winner late. With less than five minutes to go,
Chris Wiley netted the go-ahead goal, slotting home after a well-placed assist from
Carlos Andres Romero. Commanding space on the right side of the box, Romero delivered a low pass to the foot of Wiley that allowed him to fire it into the back of the net with force. Wiley's strike sealed the 2-1 result and secured Lynchburg's conference win against the first ODAC opponent of the season.
The Hornets outshot Randolph-Macon 19-14, placing nine efforts on frame. Lynchburg also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks, applying consistent pressure in the attacking third. Goalkeeper
Thomas Viscuso went the full 90 minutes, recording one save to preserve the win.
With the result, Lynchburg improves to 6-0-2 overall and 1-0 in ODAC action. The Hornets will look to carry their momentum forward as they welcome Randolph to Shellenberger Field on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
