Women's Soccer Overpowers Marymount with Second-Half Surge

Arlington, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team conquered its fifth victory in the past six matches with a 3-1 nonconference triumph over Marymount to begin a three-game road stretch.

Following a scoreless first half, Lynchburg netted three goals in a 25-minute span to assume full control of the match. The Hornets outshot the Saints 20-7, placing 12 opportunities on frame and earning eight corner kicks. Starting keeper Kate Shepherd made three saves, without allowing a goal, before exiting the match with a comfortable lead.

To open the action, Lynchburg fired eight shots and collected five corner kicks in the initial 30 minutes. Marymount keepers Layne Kaufman and Mara Dufour combined to hold the Hornets scoreless in the first 45 minutes with six saves.

The Hornets would not be silenced in the second half, earning goals from Morgan Oliver, Lune DenHartog, and Lauren Orner. In the midfield, Oliver and Orner combined to score in the same match for the fourth time this season.

In the 48th minute, Madelyn Boyce sent a cross along the goal line from the widest dimension of the field, and Morgan Oliver netted the shot as the pass slithered past the keeper. Oliver's goal accounts for her fourth on the season, while Boyce tallied her first assist.

For Lynchburg's second goal, Lune DenHartog capitalized on a deflection from a towering corner kick by Morgan Oliver. As the ball weaved through the box, DenHartog stood alone in front of the keeper and laced the shot into the net. The freshman defender now boasts two goals on the season while recording a team-high 678 minutes on the pitch.

Eight minutes later, Lauren Orner connected with a header in the box off a corner kick from the opposite side of the field, giving Lynchburg a 3-0 advantage. Sammie Rogstad targeted the back post with a curling cross, and Orner tucked the chance away to strengthen the lead. Each of Lynchburg's three scores in the match were assisted.

Marymount's Nicole Alvarado posted the Saints' lone goal of the match in the 89th minute to prevent the clean sheet, though the Hornets prevailed with a 3-1 defeat. Lynchburg remained undefeated against Marymount with a 2-0 series lead, following last year's opening match between the nonconference foes.

The Hornets improved to 6-1-1, marking the first time Lynchburg has opened a season winning six of its first eight games since 2021.

Lynchburg travels to Salem, Va. to face Roanoke on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 5:00 p.m.
