Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team scored in the first 90 seconds and never relinquished the lead en route to a 3-0 victory over Meredith in the final game of the Shellenberger Classic.
Lynchburg fired 30 shots, directing 17 on-frame, and the Hornets forced 14 saves by the Avenging Angels' goalkeeping staff. Meredith did not offer a shot in the losing effort.
In the opening minutes, Meredith keeper Samantha Woodfin bobbled a cross that found the foot of Madelyn Boyce for the opening goal. With the score, Boyce earned her first goal of 2025 after securing 10 goals last season.
Following several additional opportunities, Lauren Orner used fancy footwork to cause a defender to stumble and open a window of space. The junior fired a shot from beyond the 18-yard box that curved past the keeper for an insurance tally.
Morgan Oliver looped the Hornets' third score inside the top-right corner of the frame from outside the box. Lynchburg scored each goal of the contest inside the opening 25 minutes of the game.
Both coaches swapped keepers after the opening half, though neither squad popped the net in the final 45 minutes.Â
With a fourth consecutive shutout, the Hornets matched their historical start to the 1999 season. Lynchburg opened the season with four shutouts while remaining unbeaten through the first 16 matches, finishing the season with a 20-2-2 record.
Lynchburg returns to action on Saturday, Sep. 13 at 1:00 p.m. on the road against Maryville. The last meeting between the Hornets and Scots developed into a 2-1 Lynchburg victory at the Shellenberger Classic in 2019.
