Hornets Take Down Cougars, 68-30

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team defeated Averett, 68-30, on Saturday evening in Turner Gymnasium, allowing the lowest scoring total to an opponent in six seasons.

The Hornets (8-5, 1-3 ODAC) held the Cougars (4-9, 0-4) to just 30 points, which was the best defensive showing for the program since Lynchburg defeated Hood, 70-26, on Dec. 20, 2019. As a group, the Hornets held AU to just 11-of-62 field goals (.177 percent) and did not allow a 3-pointer the entire contest despite Averett firing off 17 shots from beyond-the-arc.

Kate Littlejohn paced Lynchburg on the offensive end with 20 points on eight-of-10 from the field, including two-of-two from long range. Audra Petty added 13 points while Bree Spainhour tallied 11 to round out double-figure performers for the Hornets. Petty and Brooke Cason each grabbed eight boards, which tied for a team-high. Cason added six points and six dimes to her solid performance.

After Averett scored the first bucket of the affair, Lynchburg answered with a 10-2 run to move in front for good. Littlejohn and Taylor Brown contributed four points apiece while Spainhour and Petty each added three to push Lynchburg to a 14-6 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

Lynchburg continued building separation in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 18-8 to take a 32-14 advantage into halftime. The Hornets shot .571 percent in the second quarter and continued to control the glass, outrebounding the cougars by a 24-18 margin in the first half.

The third quarter was Lynchburg's most productive, as it outscored Averett 23-5 to earn a commanding 55-19 lead. Lynchburg shot .500 percent in the quarter and knocked down three-of-four 3-pointers while limiting Averett to just one made field goal on 14 attempts.

Lynchburg coasted through the final period with a 13-11 fourth quarter to secure the 68-30 final. Next on the slate for the Hornets is a home bout against Bridgewater on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.
