Men's Soccer Downs Eastern Mennonite, 3-1

Harrisonburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team scored three consecutive goals and earned a 3-1 victory over Eastern Mennonite at the EMU Turf Field on Saturday.

The Hornets improved to 9-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play with the win. Lynchburg finished with advantages of 25-10 in total shots, 12-6 in shots on goal and 5-2 in corner kicks. Eastern Mennonite placed two early attempts on target, but Lynchburg goalkeeper Stefan Kapitanov stopped shots in the fourth and 11th minutes to keep the match scoreless.

The Hornets broke through with 51 seconds remaining in the opening half. William Casey scored his third goal of the season at the 44:09 mark, with Chris Bovo providing the assist. The goal sent Lynchburg into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

Lynchburg added to its lead shortly after the break. Jefferson Lopez Coreas scored an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute, recording his team-leading eighth goal of the season and doubling the Hornets' advantage.

Fischer Daniel followed just over two minutes later, scoring his third goal of the season at the 54:45 mark to give Lynchburg a 3-0 lead. The Hornets generated 19 shots in the second half and placed 11 of those attempts on target. Bovo, Daniel and Izaack Cruz each finished with three shots, while Casey and Lopez Coreas recorded two apiece.

Eastern Mennonite got on the board in the 78th minute when Hector Ortiz scored off an assist from Chris Salazar, producing the final 3-1 margin. Kapitanov played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves to earn the victory. Lynchburg held 57 percent of the possession and limited the Royals to five shots in each half while securing its ninth win of the season.

Lynchburg has one more road outing before returning home and is set to square off against Shenandoah on Wednesday, October 14 at 7 p.m. in Winchester, Va.
