Lynchburg Shuts Out Shenandoah, 2-0

Winchester, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team scored once in each half and held Shenandoah to one shot on goal in a 2-0 victory at Glo Fiber Field at Shentel Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The No. 6 Lynchburg Hornets (10-1-2, 4-0-1 ODAC) remain undefeated in conference play with their victory over the Shenandoah Hornets (5-3-5, 2-1-2). Lynchburg outshot Shenandoah 15-6 and placed five attempts on target while limiting the hosts to one.

Lynchburg controlled the offensive chances throughout the opening half, producing 10 shots to Shenandoah's one. Noah Coughlin forced a save less than two minutes into the match, and Jefferson Lopez Coreas placed another attempt on target in the 14th minute.

William Casey added a shot on goal in the 28th minute before Lopez Coreas broke the scoreless tie at the 27:52 mark. His unassisted finish marked his ninth goal of the season and gave Lynchburg a 1-0 advantage. Lopez Coreas's goal total and goals per game average (.750 per affair) are both marks that lead the ODAC.

The Hornets carried that lead into halftime after allowing no Shenandoah shots on target during the opening 45 minutes. Lynchburg doubled its advantage in the 61st minute when a Shenandoah own goal made the score 2-0. Will Clark sent a cross from the left side of the goalkeeper's area that deflected off of the netminder and into the back of the net.

Shenandoah recorded its only shot on goal in the 65th minute, but Stefan Kapitanov made the save to preserve the shutout. Kapitanov played all 90 minutes and finished with one save while earning his second goalkeeper victory of the season.

Lopez Coreas led Lynchburg with five shots and placed two on goal. Coughlin added three shots with two on target, while Casey recorded Lynchburg's other shot on goal. Both teams earned three corner kicks.

The men's soccer squad looks ahead to its matchup against No. 8 Washington and Lee on Shellenberger Field this Saturday, October 17 at 2 p.m.
