Lynchburg, Va. – Lauren Orner netted the game-winning header in the 53rd minute as the University of Lynchburg women's soccer team overcame Randolph with a 1-0 victory at WildCat Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Despite the Wildcats' defensive persistence, Lynchburg built a 27-2 shot advantage and forced 14 saves. The Hornets snagged six corner kicks, while defensively, Julia Salo helped the team claim its third consecutive shutout and 10th of the season.
Lynchburg outshot Randolph 10-2 in the opening 45 minutes, while neither team made a substitution until the 27th minute. Both defenses limited passing in each attacking third, which forced several chances from beyond the 18-yard box.
One of Lynchburg's premier opportunities arrived in the 19th minute when Randolph keeper Kacie Walker narrowly saved a barreling shot by Makayla Hargrove in the bottom corner. The teams combined for just two shots in the final 14 minutes of the half to maintain a 0-0 scoreline.
In the 53rd minute, Lynchburg converted its lone score as Hargrove lifted a cross into the box to find Orner for a header. Orner's goal marked her second of the season, while Hargrove upped her season points total to 17.
Lynchburg used stellar time management and maneuvered a physical second half to protect the 1-0 lead through the finish line. The Hornets have scored first in 20 of their 21 wins between the 2025 and 2026 campaigns. In addition, Lynchburg improved to 25-0 versus Randolph since the turn of the century, while the Hornets have only allowed one goal during that span.
The Hornets return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 17 to celebrate Homecoming Weekend with a conference clash against Roanoke at 5:00 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
