Hornets Swarm Marlins in Homecoming Win, 5-0

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team continued its unbeaten run through Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with a 5-0 victory over Batten University on Saturday afternoon.

Lynchburg (9-5, 4-0 ODAC) controlled the contest from start to finish, holding a 21-1 advantage in shots and an 18-2 edge in penalty corners while limiting Batten University (5-10, 0-5 ODAC) to just one shot on goal.

The Hornets wasted little time establishing control, striking three times in the opening quarter. Abigail Junker opened the scoring off an assist from Taylor Secrist, giving Lynchburg the early advantage.

Grace Peterson followed with a pair of goals later in the period, extending Lynchburg's lead to 3-0 before the end of the first quarter. The Hornets generated eight shots and eight penalty corners during the frame, keeping consistent pressure on the Batten defense.

The scoring slowed in the second quarter, but Lynchburg continued to dictate possession and hold Batten without a sustained offensive push. The visitors managed their only shot of the contest during the period, but Shay Schoones turned the attempt away to preserve the shutout.

Khanyisile Mzizi added to the advantage in the third quarter, converting to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead. Lynchburg's defense again held Batten without a shot in the frame while continuing to generate opportunities on the attacking end.

Mzizi struck once more in the fourth quarter to complete her two-goal afternoon and close out the scoring at 5-0. The Hornets produced seven shots and six penalty corners over the final period.

Mzizi and Peterson each finished with two goals to lead the Lynchburg attack, while Junker contributed the other score. Secrist recorded the game's lone assist and paced the Hornets with seven shots, placing four on goal. Peterson added four attempts, while Mzizi put both of her shots on target.

Schoones played all 60 minutes in goal, making one save to record the shutout. The Hornets' defense did not allow a shot in the first, third or fourth quarters.
