Virginia Beach, Va. --Â The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to earn a 2-1 victory over Batten on Saturday at the Foster Field/Tassos Paphitis Soccer Complex.
Saul Lopez Coreas scored the deciding goal with 56 seconds remaining, completing the Hornets' comeback and lifting Lynchburg to 7-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play. Batten moved to 1-4-5 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference.
The Marlins opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the match when Cowen Napior found the net for his second goal of the season. Lynchburg recorded four shots during the opening half.
Matthew Viscuso produced the Hornets' first attempt on goal in the 10th minute, while
Bruno Rihl Silva,
Evan Pask and Viscuso added shots later in the period.
The Hornets increased their pressure after halftime and pulled even at the 55:03 mark. Following a blocked attempt by
Carlos Andres Romero, Viscuso scored his first goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1.
Lynchburg continued to create chances, registering 13 second-half shots.
Noah Coughlin forced a save in the 57th minute before Viscuso placed consecutive attempts on goal in the 80th and 81st minutes. With the match still level in the final minute, Lopez Coreas scored his first goal of the season at 89:04 to give Lynchburg the lead.
The Hornets finished with a 17-8 advantage in total shots and outshot the Marlins 13-3 after halftime. Viscuso led Lynchburg with five shots, placing four on goal, while Pask and Romero each attempted three.
Fischer Daniel added two shots.
Vikram Couto played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves, including three in the second half. Lynchburg held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks and 54 percent of the possession.
Next up, the Hornets will face off against Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday, October 7 at Shellenberger Field at 7 p.m.
