Men's Soccer Outlasts Hampden-Sydney, 2-1

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to earn a 2-1 victory over Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday evening at Shellenberger Field.

The No. 8 Hornets (8-1-2, 2-0-1 ODAC) owned a 2-0 lead in the second half and outlasted a late comeback effort from the Tigers (7-2-2, 1-2-1 ODAC) who scored in the ending minutes of the game. Lynchburg controlled the attacking opportunities during a scoreless opening half, outshooting Hampden-Sydney 7-3. Bruno Rihl Silva produced the only shot on goal of the period in the 11th minute, forcing a save from Tigers goalkeeper Stig Larson.

The Hornets broke through shortly after halftime. Evan Pask set up Jefferson Lopez Coreas for the opening goal at the 46:42 mark. The score was Lopez Coreas' seventh of the season.
Lynchburg doubled its advantage in the 73rd minute when Chris Bovo scored his first goal of the season. Bovo's unassisted goal came at 72:26 and gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead.

Kohlby Wilson placed a shot on target 17 seconds later, but Larson made the save. Wilson added another attempt in the 78th minute before Isaac Torres recorded Lynchburg's final shot of the match in the 85th.

Hampden-Sydney cut the lead to one at 85:27 when Ubaid Wasi scored his seventh goal of the season off an assist from Larson. The Hornets did not allow another shot over the remaining time.

Lynchburg finished with a 13-6 advantage in total shots and placed four attempts on goal. Lopez Coreas led the Hornets with four shots, while Wilson recorded two. Nine Lynchburg players registered at least one attempt. The Hornets also earned four corner kicks compared with one for the Tigers and held 57 percent of the possession. Vikram Couto played all 90 minutes in goal and earned the victory.

Next up, the Hornets will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. on Saturday, October 10 to square off against Eastern Mennonite.
