Forest, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team swept the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's weekly awards, with Khanyisile Mzizi earning Offensive Player of the Week and Shay Schoones receiving Defensive Player of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
The recognition follows a thrilling conclusion to the regular season for the Hornets, who earned consecutive 3-2 overtime victories over Washington and Lee and Shenandoah to finish conference play with an undefeated 8-0 record and secure the top seed in the ODAC Tournament.
Mzizi played an instrumental role in Lynchburg's offensive success, recording one goal and three assists for five points across the two contests. The midfielder tallied six shots, placing four on goal, while contributing to both game-winning performances.
Against Washington and Lee, Mzizi delivered one of the biggest moments of Lynchburg's season. After assisting Taylor Secrist on a go-ahead goal late in regulation, Mzizi found the back of the cage in overtime off a feed from Allie Freeman to secure the 3-2 victory over the Generals.
The following Saturday, Mzizi continued her offensive production against Shenandoah, registering two assists in another 3-2 overtime triumph. Her contributions helped Lynchburg complete an undefeated conference regular season.
Through 18 games, Mzizi has totaled eight goals and 10 assists for 26 points. She has registered 57 shots, including 39 on goal, and has recorded two game-winning goals this season.
On the defensive end, Schoones anchored the Hornets throughout both overtime victories, totaling 12 saves across the two contests while facing 32 combined shots.
In Wednesday's matchup against Washington and Lee, Schoones recorded six saves, including two crucial stops during overtime to keep Lynchburg in contention before Mzizi delivered the game-winning goal.
Schoones followed that performance with another six-save outing against Shenandoah on Saturday. The goalkeeper made four saves during the second half as the visitors continued to generate offensive pressure, helping the Hornets force overtime before Abigail Junker secured the victory.
Across the two contests, Schoones logged more than 136 minutes in the cage, helping Lynchburg extend its winning streak to 10 games.
For the season, Schoones has recorded 110 saves with an .846 save percentage and a 1.21 goals-against average. She has also registered four shutouts and 12 victories in the cage.
The weekly recognition adds to an impressive season for Schoones, who has now earned four ODAC Defensive Player of the Week honors during the 2026 campaign.
Lynchburg (13-5, 8-0 ODAC) will now turn its attention to postseason competition, hosting an ODAC Tournament semifinal at Shellenberger Field.
