Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team welcomed Pfeiffer to Fox Field on Wednesday afternoon and notched its second shutout of the season, 8-0.
The No. 7/5 Hornets (10-3-1) jumped out to an early lead over the Falcons (5-10) in the first inning.
Brandon Garcia worked a walk and advanced to third before
Jack Pokorak launched a two-run home run to left field to open the scoring. Later in the inning,
Quinn Madden moved into scoring position and came home on a sacrifice fly by
Sean Pokorak, giving Lynchburg a 3-0 advantage.
Lynchburg added two more runs in the second inning.
Gavin Angelillo doubled to start the frame and scored on an RBI single from Garcia.
Benton Jones followed with an RBI single to bring home Garcia and extend the lead to 5-0.
The Hornets pushed across another run in the third.
Joe Munitz doubled to right field and later scored when Angelillo singled through the left side, stretching the lead to 6-0.
Lynchburg added the final runs in the sixth inning. Jones reached after being hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position before Madden connected on a two-run home run to right field to make it 8-0.
The Hornets finished with 16 hits in the contest. Pokorak led the offense with three hits, including a home run and two RBI, while Madden added two hits and two RBI. Angelillo also collected three hits and drove in a run, and Garcia recorded two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.
On the mound,
Lucas Marrero earned the win with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out six.
Tyce Fischl followed with two scoreless innings, and
Justin Davis,
Trent Judd,
Austin Riney, and
Colin McGuire combined to keep Pfeiffer off the scoreboard as Lynchburg completed the shutout.
Next up, the Hornets will head to Harrisonburg, Va. for a double header against ODAC foe Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, March 14, starting at noon.
