Harrisonburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, earning a 12-4 victory in the opener before following with a 13-2 seven-inning win in the second game.
In the first game, the No. 7/5 Hornets (12-3-1, 3-0-1 ODAC) broke through against the Royals (7-8, 0-2) in the second inning with four runs.
Sean Pokorak opened the scoring with a solo home run to left center, and later in the inning
Benton Jones delivered a two-run double to right field.
Jack Pokorak followed with an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-0. Eastern Mennonite answered with a run in the bottom half, but the Hornets added two more in the third when
Kyle Flora hit a two-run home run to left to make it 6-1.
Lynchburg added another run in the seventh when
Eli Carroll singled through the right side to drive in
Sean Pokorak. Eastern Mennonite cut the deficit to 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh, but the Hornets pulled away in the ninth with five runs on six hits.
Gavin Angelillo drove in a run with a single,
Maddox Tsutsui doubled home two more, and
Brandon Garcia added an RBI double. Garcia later scored on a wild pitch to cap the scoring.
The Hornets finished with 12 runs on 16 hits.
Sean Pokorak recorded three hits and scored three times, while Flora had two hits and two RBIs. Tsutsui drove in two runs and Garcia and Jones each added two RBIs. On the mound,
Tyler Kaltreider earned the win, allowing three runs, one earned, over six innings while striking out six.
In the second game, Lynchburg again built an early lead.
Brandon Garcia scored the first run of the game in the opening inning after drawing a walk, stealing second, and coming home on a balk. The Hornets added two more runs in the second when
Jack Pokorak singled through the right side to drive in two runs.
Lynchburg extended the lead in the fourth as
Jack Pokorak doubled home a run,
Quinn Madden lifted a sacrifice fly, and
Joe Munitz added an RBI single to make it 6-0. The Hornets continued to add on in the fifth and sixth innings, with runs scoring on wild pitches, a sacrifice fly by
Jack Pokorak, an RBI walk by Munitz, and another wild pitch.
Lynchburg finished with 13 runs on 10 hits while drawing 13 walks.
Jack Pokorak led the offense with three hits and four RBIs, while Munitz added two RBIs and Madden drove in a run.
Nick Mattfield earned the win, allowing one run over five innings, and
Logan Tapman worked the final two innings as Lynchburg secured the sweep.
Next up, the Hornets return home for the squad's Code Red game against Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday, March 18 at 3 p.m.
