Danville, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team began conference competition with a road trip to Averett and earned a 25-3 victory on Wednesday night at Campbell Stadium.
Seventeen different performers scored for the No. 3/3 Hornets (6-1, 1-0 ODAC) in today's victory over the Cougars (0-8, 0-2), led by
Van Tanguay's three goals, while
Drew Schmidt paced the team with four assists. The Hornets outshot Averett 61-11, held a 60-17 advantage in ground balls, and won 28-of-31 faceoffs in the victory.
The Hornets set the tone early, scoring nine goals in the first quarter.
Riley Hastings opened the scoring off an assist from
Cam Ash, and
Spencer Vandenberg followed with an unassisted goal. After Averett answered to make it 2-1, Lynchburg responded with a seven-goal run. Hastings added another goal, while Tanguay scored twice during the stretch, including one assisted by
Mark Rubley.
Quincy White and
Nathan Miller each scored, and
Ryan Hildebrand and White added late goals to give the Hornets a 9-1 lead after one.
Lynchburg continued to build its advantage in the second quarter. Tanguay completed his hat trick on a feed from
Drew Schmidt, and
Mikey Richardson later scored off an assist from
Hudson Royer to extend the lead to 11-1 at halftime.
The Hornets added six more goals in the third quarter.
Henry Fowler opened the scoring with a goal assisted by Richardson, followed by a quick strike from
Rocco Egan.
James Bauer converted a man-up opportunity from
Quincy White, and Miller added his second goal of the game. Schmidt and Richardson also found the net as Lynchburg built a 17-3 lead entering the fourth.
Lynchburg closed the game with eight goals in the fourth quarter. Hildebrand scored early off an assist from
Adam Volm, and
Brooks Griffith,
Ethan Carr, and
Andrew Beal added goals during the run. Volm later scored off a pass from
Evan Yale, while
Liam Crawford and Yale each added goals down the stretch, with Yale scoring twice off assists from Schmidt.
Next up, the Hornets welcome Bridgewater to Shellenberger Field on Saturday, March 21 at 7 p.m.
