Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team returned home after a two-week road stint and took down Bridgewater, 26-5, on Saturday night at Shellenberger Field.
The No. 3/3 Hornets (7-1, 2-0 ODAC)Â opened the scoring against the Eagles (6-4, 0-3) early when
Cole Oprandi found the net, and after Bridgewater tied the game, Lynchburg responded with a strong first-quarter run.
Will Rubley scored four goals in the opening period, including two assisted by
Riley Hastings, while Hastings added two late goals in the final seconds. Lynchburg closed the quarter on a 6-0 surge to take a 7-3 lead.
Lynchburg broke the game open in the second quarter, scoring 10 goals to build a commanding halftime advantage.
Finn Schmidt opened the period with a goal off a Hastings assist, and
Liam Holman and
Parker Sealey followed with goals assisted by Rubley.
Spencer Vandenberg and
Kayden Hinchey each added goals during the run, while Schmidt and
Van Tanguay contributed multiple scores as the Hornets extended the lead to 17-4 at the break.
The Hornets continued their momentum in the third quarter with five more goals. Tanguay scored twice off assists from Schmidt, while
Liam Crawford and Schmidt each added goals.
Henry Fowler also found the net to push Lynchburg's lead to 22-5 entering the fourth quarter.
Lynchburg closed out the game with four goals in the final period, including scores from
Brooks Griffith,
Evan Yale,
Jack Murdock, and
Ryan Hildebrand. Schmidt and Rubley led the Hornets with four goals apiece, while Tanguay added three. Hastings recorded two goals and three assists, and Schmidt added three assists for a team-high seven points. Lynchburg outshot Bridgewater 53-27, held a 56-22 advantage in ground balls, and won 28 of 35 faceoffs in the victory.
Next on deck, the Hornets will head to Roanoke on Saturday, March 28 at 3 p.m.
