No. 3/3 Lynchburg Sweeps Guilford On The Road

Greensboro, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team took a trip to Guilford for a Saturday double header and won both games, the first with a 6-5 final and the second 17-2 in seven innings.

In game one, the No. 3/3 Hornets (15-3-1, 6-0-1 ODAC) struck first against the Quakers (9-11, 1-6) in the opening inning when Brandon Garcia homered down the right-field line. Benton Jones later stole home to make it 2-0. Guilford answered quickly with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first and added another run in the second to take a 4-2 lead. The Quakers extended their advantage to 5-2 in the sixth.

The Hornets mounted their comeback in the seventh inning. Sean Pokorak singled and later scored, and after two walks loaded the bases, Garcia drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run. Jones followed with a two-run single to tie the game at 5-5. Lynchburg took the lead in the eighth when Joe Munitz singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Flora.

Lynchburg finished with seven hits and seven walks. Garcia had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs, while Jones added two RBI. On the mound, Colin McGuire earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits and striking out three to close out the victory.

In the second game, Lynchburg took control early and never looked back. The Hornets scored two runs in the first inning on a double by Jones and a sacrifice fly by Quinn Madden, then added two more in the second on a two-run single from Jack Pokorak. Lynchburg broke the game open in the third with four runs, highlighted by a three-run double from Jones.

The biggest inning came in the fourth, when the Hornets scored eight runs. Madden hit a solo home run, and runs continued to pile up through a combination of walks, hit batters, and timely hits, including an RBI single from Eli Carroll and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch for Jones.

Lynchburg totaled 17 runs on 10 hits and drew 11 walks. Jones led the way with five RBI, while Madden drove in three runs. Joe Munitz added a double and an RBI. On the mound, Nick Mattfield earned the win, allowing two runs over five innings. Davis Watson followed with two scoreless innings, striking out six as Lynchburg completed the sweep.

Next on the slate, the Hornets will travel to RV Randolph-Macon on Tuesday, March 24 at 3:30 p.m.
