Ashland, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games with a 7-4 victory against ODAC rival Randolph-Macon on Tuesday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field.
The No. 2/2 Hornets (16-3-1, 7-0-1)Â struck first against the RV Yellow Jackets (11-6, 5-3)Â Â in the opening inning when
Brandon Garcia doubled and later scored on a groundout by
Benton Jones to take a 1-0 lead. Randolph-Macon answered in the bottom half and then moved ahead 3-1 in the second inning on a two-run single.
Lynchburg chipped away in the third inning as Garcia singled and came around to score on an RBI single from
Jack Pokorak, cutting the deficit to 3-2. The Hornets tied the game in the fourth when
Joe Munitz doubled and
Sean Pokorak followed with an RBI single to right field.
Lynchburg took control in the fifth inning. Garcia walked and stole second before Jones drew a walk. Pokorak then delivered another RBI single to center to give Lynchburg the lead, and
Quinn Madden added a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage to 5-3.
After a scoreless stretch in the middle innings, Lynchburg added key insurance in the eighth.
Kyle Flora doubled to lead off the inning, and
Gabriel Pegues followed with an RBI single. Jones then tripled to right field to bring home Pegues and push the lead to 7-3. Randolph-Macon added a run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Hornets closed out the win.
Lynchburg finished with 14 hits in the game. Garcia led the offense with two hits and three runs scored, while Jones collected two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs. Pokorak added two hits and two RBIs, and
Sean Pokorak and Flora each contributed two hits.
On the mound,
Logan Tapman earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits over five innings while striking out seven.
Austin Riney recorded an inning of scoreless relief, and
Trent Judd closed the game with three innings, allowing one run and striking out four to secure the victory.
The Hornets have a quick turnaround, returning to the field tomorrow for a nonconference contest against Greensboro on Fox Field at 3:30 p.m.
