Salem, Va. -- A spectacular fourth quarter that saw the University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team score six goals while allowing just one pushed the squad past Roanoke, 17-13, on Saturday afternoon.
The No. 2/2 Hornets (8-1, 3-0 ODAC) were led offensively by
Riley Hastings with eight points on six goals and two assists, and three scores came in the final period. In that final quarter, Schmidt tied the game early at 12 apiece, although the RV Maroons (6-3, 3-2) briefly regained the lead on a man-up goal.
Mark Rubley answered with a man-up goal assisted by
Will Rubley - the brotherly connection - to even the score at 13-13.
Matej Roth followed with the go-ahead goal, and Hastings added two more during a decisive run. Holman capped the scoring with a man-up goal before Hastings added the final tally to secure the 17-13 victory.
Roanoke opened the scoring early in the first period, but Lynchburg responded with back-to-back goals from
Liam Holman and
Spencer Vandenberg to take a 2-1 lead. After the Maroons tied the game,
Riley Hastings scored twice, including a goal assisted by
Matej Roth, as Lynchburg moved ahead 4-3. Roanoke answered with an extra-man goal late in the quarter to even the score at 4-4 after one.
Holman opened the second quarter with an unassisted goal, but Roanoke responded with a four-goal run to take an 8-5 lead. Hastings cut into the deficit with a late goal assisted by
Parker Sealey, sending Lynchburg into halftime trailing 8-6.
The Hornets battled back in the third quarter. After Roanoke extended its lead to 10-6,
Finn Schmidt scored on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Hastings. Schmidt added another goal, and
Cam Ash scored off a feed from
Cole Oprandi. Schmidt completed his hat trick before Hastings scored late in the quarter to trim the deficit to 12-11 heading into the fourth.
Hastings led Lynchburg on the attacking end, while Schmidt added four goals. Holman finished with three goals and one assist as Lynchburg outshot Roanoke 56-36, collected 37 ground balls, and won 28 faceoffs in the victory.
Eric Allen recorded 13 saves in goal for the Hornets.
Next up, Lynchburg will travel to Virginia Beach, Va. for a midweek matchup against Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, April 1 at 4 p.m.
