Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team showcased an impressive all-around performance that included a 13-run second inning to earn an 18-0 victory against Greensboro on Wednesday afternoon at Fox Field.
After a scoreless first inning, the No. 2/2 Hornets (17-3-1) broke the game open against the Pride (12-10) with a 13-run second inning.
Quinn Madden started the rally with a double, and
Joe Munitz followed with a two-run home run to right field.
Kyle Moshier later singled home a run, and
Benton Jones drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead.
Jack Pokorak then delivered the biggest swing of the inning, launching a grand slam to left field. Lynchburg continued to pile on as
Kyle Flora added a two-run single, and
Eli Carroll capped the inning with a three-run home run to push the advantage to 13-0.
Lynchburg added another run in the third inning when Jones doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Madden. The Hornets extended the lead in the fourth as Carroll singled and stole second before Jones tripled to left field, bringing home two runs. Garcia later scored on a wild pitch during the inning to make it 17-0.
The Hornets added their final run in the sixth inning. Jones singled and advanced before
Gabriel Pegues drove him in with a fielder's choice to complete the scoring. Lynchburg finished with 18 runs on 13 hits while drawing nine walks and benefiting from five hit batters. Jones led the offense with four hits, including a double and triple, and three RBIs. Carroll drove in three runs with a home run and also scored three times, while Pokorak finished with four RBI on his grand slam. Munitz added a two-run homer and Madden recorded two hits and an RBI.
On the mound,
Lucas Marrero earned the win, allowing one hit over 2.2 innings while striking out four.
Davis Watson followed with 2.1 scoreless innings, and
Justin Davis and
Matt Cassidy combined to finish the three-hit shutout.
Next up, the Hornets will return to ODAC play as they welcome the Roanoke Maroons to Fox Field for a double header on Saturday, March 28, starting at noon.
