Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team used an offensive barrage against Nichols to earn a 14-4 victory on Monday afternoon at Fox Field.
The No. 7/4 Hornets (9-3-1) struck quickly in the first inning and led the Bison (1-4) the rest of the way.
Benton Jones was hit by a pitch and
Jack Pokorak followed with a two-run home run to right field, giving Lynchburg an early 2-0 lead.
Nichols answered with a run in the second, but Lynchburg responded with a three-run third inning. Jones launched a two-run home run to right to extend the lead, and later in the inning
Sean Pokorak delivered an RBI single that scored
Joe Munitz, pushing the advantage to 5-1.
Lynchburg added two more runs in the fourth.
Brandon Garcia walked and eventually scored when
Jack Pokorak tripled to right field.
Quinn Madden later walked and came home on a passed ball to stretch the lead to 7-1.
Nichols cut into the margin with two runs in the fifth, but the Hornets broke the game open in the sixth. Madden walked and stole third before
Kyle Moshier delivered a three-run double that drove in Madden,
Kyle Flora, and
Gavin Angelillo, extending the lead to 10-3.
The Hornets added four more runs in the eighth inning. Garcia singled and, with two runners on, an error in right field allowed three runs to score. Madden then reached on another error that brought home an additional run.
Lynchburg finished with 14 runs on 11 hits while drawing 12 walks. Pokorak led the offense with three hits, including a home run and a triple, and drove in three runs. Garcia scored three times and added three RBI, while Jones contributed a two-RBI home run.
On the mound,
Nick Mattfield earned the win, allowing three runs, one earned, over 4.2 innings while striking out six.
Davis Watson followed with 2.1 scoreless innings and five strikeouts, and several relievers combined to close out the victory.
The Hornets hit the field again on Thursday, welcoming Pfeiffer to Fox Field on March 11 at 3 p.m.
