Virginia Beach, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team traveled to Virginia Wesleyan and netted over 20 goals for the fifth time this season en route to a 22-9 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
The No. 3/3 Hornets (9-1, 4-0 ODAC) set the tone early against the Marlins (9-3, 3-2), scoring four goals in the opening minutes.
Liam Holman opened the scoring off an assist from
Riley Hastings, and
Spencer Vandenberg followed with back-to-back goals as Lynchburg built a 4-0 lead. After Virginia Wesleyan answered with a man-up goal, Lynchburg responded with three more goals, including another from Vandenberg, to take a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Lynchburg extended its advantage in the second quarter, scoring nine times.
Parker Sealey opened the period off an assist from Holman, while
Kayden Hinchey,
Drew Schmidt, and
Cole Oprandi each added goals during the run. Vandenberg completed his fourth goal of the game on a man-up opportunity, and
Ryan Hildebrand, Schmidt,
Van Tanguay, and
Henry Fowler also found the net as the Hornets built a 16-2 halftime lead.
The Hornets continued to control play in the third quarter. Fowler scored early off an assist from
Jackson Scaperotto, and
Quincy White added a goal assisted by
Mikey Richardson. After Virginia Wesleyan scored,
Adam Volm closed the quarter with a goal assisted by
James Bauer to give Lynchburg a 19-3 lead entering the fourth.
Virginia Wesleyan scored multiple times in the fourth quarter, but Lynchburg answered with goals from Bauer and Schmidt to maintain control.
Alex Morton added the final goal in the closing seconds to secure the 22-9 victory.
Vandenberg led Lynchburg with four goals, while Schmidt added three goals. Holman and Fowler each scored twice, and
Will Rubley recorded four assists. Lynchburg outshot Virginia Wesleyan 48-33, collected 44 ground balls, and won 21 faceoffs in the win.
The Hornets return to the field this weekend for their final nonconference matchup of the regular season. Stevenson will visit Shellenberger Field on Saturday, April 4 at 2 p.m.
