Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team took on its first top-20 nationally-ranked opponent in nearly a month in ODAC foe Randolph-Macon and stood victorious, 14-10, on Saturday night at Shellenberger Field.
The No. 3/3 Hornets (11-1, 6-0 ODAC) opened the scoring against the No. 20/19 Yellow Jackets (10-3, 4-2) midway through the first quarter when
Riley Hastings found the net, followed by an unassisted goal from
Liam Holman.
Cam Ash extended the lead to 3-0 off a feed from Holman before Randolph-Macon answered with a goal.
Kolbe Haug scored late in the quarter to push the lead to 4-1, but Randolph-Macon added a goal in the final seconds to make it 4-2 after one.
Lynchburg broke the game open in the second quarter with seven goals. Hastings opened the period with a goal, and
Finn Schmidt followed with another to extend the lead. After Randolph-Macon scored twice,
Matej Roth answered with an unassisted goal. Hastings then scored twice in quick succession, including one assisted by
Riley Frankel, and Schmidt capped the quarter off a feed from Hastings to give Lynchburg an 11-4 halftime advantage.
Randolph-Macon chipped away in the third quarter, scoring early before
Cole Oprandi responded with an unassisted goal. The visitors added another late goal to narrow the margin to 12-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
Will Hicks opened the fourth-quarter scoring for Lynchburg off an assist from
Parker Sealey to push the lead to seven. Randolph-Macon answered with three consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 13-9 before Hastings scored his fifth goal of the game in the final minute to secure the victory. Randolph-Macon added a late goal in the closing seconds to make the final 14-10.
Hastings led Lynchburg with five goals and one assist, while Holman and Schmidt each added two goals.
Eric Allen made 10 saves in goal, and
Riley Frankel controlled the faceoff battle, helping Lynchburg win 21 faceoffs. The Hornets also held a 47-33 advantage in ground balls in the win.
Next up, the Hornets will take on Shenandoah for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, April 15 at 7 p.m.
