Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team produced a barrage of goals in a 27-8 victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday, April 15 at Shellenberger Field, tying for the second-most goals scored in a game in program history.
The No. 3/3 Hornets (12-1, 7-0 ODAC)Â opened the scoring against the SU Hornets (5-11, 3-6) on a goal from
Kayden Hinchey off an assist from
Finn Schmidt, but Shenandoah answered to tie the game and eventually took a 4-3 lead late in the first quarter with a pair of man-up goals.
Riley Hastings scored in the final seconds of the period to even the score at 4-4 heading into the second quarter.
Lynchburg took control in the second quarter, erupting for 10 goals.
Liam Holman opened the period, followed by goals from Hastings and
Matej Roth to give the Hornets the lead. After Shenandoah briefly cut into the margin, Lynchburg responded with a sustained run.
Van Tanguay scored twice, while Hinchey added another goal.
Will Rubley contributed three goals in the quarter, including one assisted by
Mark Rubley, and
Drew Schmidt capped the half with a goal to give Lynchburg a 14-6 lead at the break.
The Hornets continued to build their advantage in the third quarter.
Spencer Vandenberg scored twice, including one off an assist from Hastings, while
Luke Brookman and Schmidt each added goals.
James Bauer also found the net as Lynchburg extended its lead to 19-8 entering the fourth.
Lynchburg closed the game with eight goals in the fourth quarter.
Mikey Richardson opened the scoring on a man-up opportunity, and
Henry Fowler followed with three straight goals during the run.
Liam Crawford,
Alex Morton, Schmidt, and
Will Ely each added goals to complete the 27-8 victory.
Rubley led Lynchburg with four goals and two assists, while Hastings and Schmidt each recorded three goals and one assist. Fowler added three goals as the Hornets outshot Shenandoah 77-24, collected 48 ground balls, and won 30 faceoffs in the win.
Lynchburg returns to action this weekend in a road contest against Hampden-Sydney on Saturday, April 18 at 7 p.m.
