Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team tied its longest win streak since at least 1991 with 17 consecutive victories after defeating Methodist, 15-1, in seven innings on Tuesday afternoon at James C. Fox Field.
The No. 2/2 Hornets (25-3-1) got on the board against the Monarchs (15-18) in the first inning, capitalizing on early baserunners.
Brandon Garcia singled and later scored on an error, and
Sean Pokorak followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Lynchburg added to its lead in the second when
Ryder Warren hit a solo home run and
Benton Jones tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jack Pokorak, extending the advantage to 5-0.
Lynchburg continued to build momentum in the third as Warren struck again with a two-run home run, pushing the lead to 7-0. Methodist got its lone run in the fourth on an RBI single, but the Hornets quickly answered. In the bottom half of the inning, bases-loaded walks and a sacrifice fly from
Joe Munitz helped stretch the lead to 9-1.
The Hornets broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring six runs. Garcia singled and later scored, while Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in a run.
Jack Pokorak added another RBI after being hit by a pitch, and
Quinn Madden followed with an RBI fielder's choice.
Kyle Flora drew a bases-loaded walk, and Warren capped the inning with a two-run single to make it 15-1.
Lynchburg finished with 15 runs on 10 hits while drawing nine walks. Warren led the offense with three hits, including two home runs, and drove in five runs. Garcia scored four times and collected two hits, while Jones added three runs scored and an RBI.
On the mound,
Lucas Marrero earned the win with five strong innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five.
Davis Watson followed with two scoreless innings, helping secure the victory.
The Hornets are right back into action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 15 at 3 p.m. to take on Virginia Wesleyan. The squads will continue their contest that was started on April 1 - which had Lynchburg in front 19-0 through three innings - before heading into their regularly scheduled game.
