Virginia Beach, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team extended its win streak to 19 games with a double-header sweep of Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon.
The No. 2/2 Hornets (27-3-1, 14-0-1 ODAC) picked up where they left off against the Marlins (17-15, 7-8) when they suspended their game from April 1 up 19-0 after three innings and finished with a 20-3 win. In game two, Lynchburg battled past VWU for an 11-2 victory for its 19th consecutive triumph, the most in program history.
In game one, Lynchburg delivered one of its most explosive starts of the season, scoring 10 runs in the first inning and adding nine more in the second.
Benton Jones sparked the offense with a triple and later added two doubles, finishing with three hits and four RBI.
Jack Pokorak highlighted the opening frame with a two-run home run and added a sacrifice fly, driving in three runs.
The Hornets continued to take advantage of walks and hit batters in the second inning, pushing across nine runs on just three hits.
Joe Munitz doubled and scored, while
Sean Pokorak singled in a run and
Kyle Flora drove in another.
Eli Carroll and
Kyle Moshier each forced in runs after being hit by pitches, and Jones capped the inning with a two-run double.
Lynchburg totaled 20 runs on 11 hits while drawing 11 walks.
Quinn Madden added two hits and an RBI, and Carroll contributed two RBI. On the mound,
Justin Davis earned the win with two scoreless innings, striking out four as part of a combined four-hit effort from the pitching staff.
In game two, Lynchburg carried its momentum into a strong all-around performance. The Hornets struck first in the opening inning when
Brandon Garcia walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by
Jack Pokorak. Lynchburg added two more runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run from
Quinn Madden to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Hornets broke the game open in the fifth inning with four runs. Garcia delivered a two-run single, and a series of wild pitches allowed additional runs to score as the lead grew to 7-0. Virginia Wesleyan answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Lynchburg continued to add on late.
A sacrifice fly by
Benton Jones in the seventh made it 8-2, and
Kyle Flora added an RBI single in the eighth. In the ninth,
Jack Pokorak delivered a two-run single to cap the scoring at 11-2.
Madden led the offense with three hits and two RBI, while Garcia scored four runs and drove in two.
Logan Tapman earned the win with 6.1 innings, allowing two runs, and the bullpen combination of
Conner Moore and
Colin McGuire closed out the sweep.
The Hornets return to action this weekend against a top-10 nationally-ranked Bridgewater squad in Bridgewater, Va. on Saturday, April 18 at noon and 3 p.m.
