No. 3/3 Lynchburg Takes Down Hampden-Sydney

Hampden-Sydney, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team earned a key ODAC road victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Hampden-Sydney, 13-10, at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

The Hornets (13-1, 8-0 ODAC) battled through a tightly contested opening quarter, responding to an early deficit with goals from Riley Hastings and Liam Holman to take a 2-1 lead after the first period. Hampden-Sydney answered in the second quarter, using a three-goal stretch to build a 4-2 advantage before Holman netted his second of the game to cut the deficit to 4-3 heading into halftime.

Lynchburg took control in the third quarter with a decisive five-goal run. Will Rubley opened the frame with a man-up goal off an assist from Mark Rubley, followed by Spencer Vandenberg scoring off a feed from Will Rubley. Holman added his third goal of the day, and Hastings and Kolbe Haug each found the back of the net to give the Hornets an 8-6 lead entering the fourth.

The Hornets continued to build their advantage in the final quarter. Finn Schmidt scored twice in the period, while Mark Rubley capitalized on an extra-man opportunity. Hastings added two more goals down the stretch, including a man-down score, as Lynchburg maintained control to secure the 13-10 win.

Hastings led the Hornets with four goals and one assist, while Holman added three goals. Schmidt finished with two goals, and Will Rubley contributed one goal and two assists. Mark Rubley added a goal and an assist as Lynchburg totaled 13 goals on 51 shots in the victory.

Defensively, Eric Allen recorded seven saves in the full 60 minutes to earn the win. Lynchburg controlled possession throughout the contest, outshooting Hampden-Sydney 51-37, winning 19 faceoffs, and holding a 32-28 edge in ground balls

Lynchburg resumes play in the Hill City for an away game against Randolph on Wednesday, April 22.
