Mint Hill, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team traveled south to Colonel Francis R. Beatty Park to square off against Johnson & Wales and delivered an assertive 29-0 victory in seven innings on Thursday afternoon.
The No. 2/2 Hornets (20-3-1) earned their 20th win of the season in style against the Wildcats (3-21), scoring their highest total of runs in a single game this season and one short of the 30-2 win against Bridgewater last season. After a scoreless first inning, Lynchburg broke through in the second.
Joe Munitz reached after being hit by a pitch, stole second, and moved to third on a passed ball before
Kyle Flora singled to drive him in.
Kyle Moshier followed with a two-run double, and
Quinn Madden later drew a bases-loaded walk to cap the four-run inning.
The Hornets continued to build in the third. Moshier delivered a two-run single, and
Benton Jones followed with a two-run triple.
Jack Pokorak added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 9-0.
Lynchburg added four more runs in the fourth inning. Walton Bondurant was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Jones cleared the bases with a three-run double.
Gabriel Pegues pushed the advantage to 14-0 with a solo home run in the fifth, and
Parker Cato added an RBI single later in the inning.
The Hornets added another run in the sixth before erupting for 13 runs in the seventh.
Maddox Tsutsui highlighted the inning with a grand slam and later added a two-run double. Pegues hit his second home run of the game, while
Joe Gordon tripled and scored, and
Jacob Henry added a two-run single to cap the scoring.
Lynchburg's pitching staff combined for a one-hit shutout.
Eli Carroll earned the win with a scoreless inning, while
Davis Watson,
Colin McGuire, and
Justin Davis combined to keep Johnson & Wales-Charlotte off the board. Tsutsui finished with six RBI, Jones drove in five runs, and Pegues recorded three RBIÂ with two home runs as Lynchburg completed the dominant victory.
Next up, the Hornets will travel to Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday, April 7 at 5 p.m. to complete the home-and-home series for the season.
