Hampden-Sydney, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team traveled to Hampden-Sydney for its second contest against the Tigers this year and earned a definitive 17-5 victory in seven innings on Tuesday evening at Yank Bernier Field.
The No. 2/2 Hornets (21-3-1)Â jumped out to an early lead in the first inning against the Tigers (12-11).
Brandon Garcia singled and advanced into scoring position before
Quinn Madden delivered an RBI single.
Sean Pokorak followed with a three-run double to right center, giving the Hornets a 4-0 advantage.
Hampden-Sydney answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and added three more in the second to take a 5-4 lead. The Hornets quickly responded in the third inning, erupting for 12 runs. Madden and
Joe Munitz each walked to open the frame before
Kyle Flora drove in the tying run with a single.
Eli Carroll followed with a two-run single, and Garcia added a two-run single later in the inning to push Lynchburg back in front.
Lynchburg continued to add on as
Benton Jones singled and
Jack Pokorak walked to load the bases. Munitz lifted a sacrifice fly, and Flora later delivered a two-run single. Garcia drew a bases-loaded walk, and a passed ball brought home another run as the Hornets extended the lead to 16-5.
The Hornets added one more run in the sixth inning. Madden singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by
Sean Pokorak to complete the scoring. Lynchburg finished with 17 runs on 13 hits and drew 14 walks. Madden led the offense with three hits and four runs scored, while Garcia recorded two hits and three RBI.
Sean Pokorak drove in four runs, and Flora added three RBI.
On the mound,
Trent Judd earned the win with four scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out four.
Logan Tapman started the game, and
Austin Riney and
Davis Watson combined to close out the victory.
Next up, the Hornets will take on No. 15/16 Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va. tomorrow, Wednesday, April 8 at 3 p.m.
