Newport News, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team traveled to Christopher Newport for a nonconference contest and came away with a 16-2 victory in seven innings on Wednesday afternoon at Captain Park.
After a scoreless first inning, the No. 2/2 Hornets (22-3-2) broke through against the No. 13/13 Captains (20-8) in the second.
Quinn Madden walked and later scored when
Kyle Moshier reached on a throwing error.
Walton Bondurant IV followed with a single, and
Joe Munitz added another hit that brought home Moshier to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead.
Christopher Newport answered with two runs in the fourth inning to trim the lead to 3-2, but Lynchburg responded in the sixth.
Kyle Flora walked and
Gabriel Pegues followed with another walk before Bondurant delivered a two-run single to extend the lead. A throwing error later in the inning allowed
Kyle Moshier to score, pushing the advantage to 6-2.
The Hornets broke the game open in the seventh inning with 10 runs on seven hits. Madden singled and later scored on a throwing error. Moshier added a sacrifice fly, and Bondurant delivered an RBI single. Munitz followed with an RBI single, and
Jack Pokorak cleared the bases with a three-run double. Madden later drove in another run with a single, and Pegues and Moshier each added RBI singles to cap the inning.
Lynchburg finished with 16 runs on 10 hits while drawing six walks and taking advantage of seven Christopher Newport errors. Bondurant led the offense with three hits and three RBI, while Madden recorded two hits and three runs scored. Pokorak drove in three runs, and Moshier added two RBI.
On the mound,
Elijah Laughman earned the win in relief.
Lucas Marrero started and allowed two runs over 4.1 innings, while
Austin Riney and
Colin McGuire combined to close out the victory.
Next on the slate, the Hornets welcome Averett to Fox Field for a double header on Saturday, April 11, starting at noon.
