Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team extended its win streak to 16 games after a double-header sweep against Averett on Saturday afternoon at James C. Fox Field.
In game one, the Hornets (24-3-1, 12-0-1 ODAC) jumped out quickly against the Cougars (12-17, 5-10) with five runs in the first inning.
Brandon Garcia and
Benton Jones opened the game with singles before
Jack Pokorak drove in the first run.
Quinn Madden followed with a two-run double, and
Kyle Flora later added an RBI single. Garcia capped the inning with a bases-loaded walk to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead.
Lynchburg added another run in the second when Flora doubled to drive in Madden. The Hornets extended the lead in the fourth as Madden hit a solo home run and
Kyle Moshier added a sacrifice fly. Lynchburg broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring four runs.
Joe Munitz singled home a run,
Sean Pokorak and Flora were both hit by pitches with the bases loaded to force in runs, and Moshier added another sacrifice fly.
Madden finished with three hits, including a home run and double, while driving in three runs and scoring four times. Flora collected two hits and three RBI, and Garcia and Jones each added two hits. On the mound,
Tyler Kaltreider tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits while striking out seven.
In game two, Averett struck first with three early runs, but Lynchburg answered in the third when
Jack Pokorak launched a two-run home run to tie the game. The Hornets took control in the fourth, scoring four runs. Pokorak singled home a run, Madden doubled in another,
Joe Munitz added a sacrifice fly, and
Sean Pokorak singled to extend the lead.
Lynchburg added a run in the sixth when
Kyle Flora doubled home Madden, then broke the game open in the seventh with five runs. Madden delivered a two-run single, Munitz tripled in two runs, and Flora added an RBI double.
Madden led the offense with four hits and five runs scored, while Flora collected four hits and four RBI. Pokorak drove in three runs and Munitz added three RBI.
Nick Mattfield earned the win, allowing three runs over four innings, and the bullpen combined to close out the sweep.
The Hornets will stay home for their next contest, welcoming Methodist to Fox Field on Tuesday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m.
