Lynchburg, Va. --Â To conclude an incredible, historic season, the University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team lost to York in the third round of the DIII NCAA tournament, 18-12, on Sunday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.
Riley Hastings finished his impeccable collegiate career with 300 total points to tie Austin Stewart for the program record for career points. Throughout his time as a Hornet, the Alpharetta, Ga. native tallied 165 goals and 135 assists. This season, the senior racked up 67 goals and 42 assists for 109 points, the second-most points in a single season by a Lynchburg player.
The Hornets advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the fourth consecutive year and extended their streak of appearances in the national tournament to 14 straight seasons.
In today's outing, York opened with a strong first quarter, scoring six goals while limiting the Hornets to two.
Liam Holman got Lynchburg on the board, and
Will Rubley added another goal, but the Spartans carried a 6-2 advantage into the second quarter.
The Hornets responded in the second period with four goals.
Kayden Hinchey scored twice during the quarter, while
Parker Sealey and
Riley Hastings each added goals to help Lynchburg narrow the deficit. York matched the offensive output with four goals of its own, sending the Spartans into halftime with a 10-6 lead.
York extended its advantage in the third quarter, outscoring Lynchburg 4-2.
Liam Holman added his second goal of the game, and
Spencer Vandenberg also found the net for the Hornets. Despite the effort, York entered the fourth quarter leading 14-8.
Lynchburg continued to battle in the final period with four more goals.
Matej Roth scored twice, while Hinchey completed his hat trick and
Will Rubley added his second goal of the game. York answered with five goals in the quarter to secure the 18-12 result.
Hinchey led Lynchburg with three goals, while Holman, Rubley, and Roth each scored twice. Hastings finished with one goal and two assists, and
Finn Schmidt and Rubley each recorded one assist. The Hornets held a 20-13 advantage in faceoffs and collected 31 ground balls. York finished with a 46-38 edge in shots, while both teams committed 14 turnovers in the contest.
