Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team concludes another impressive and historic season in the NCAA Super Regional round, winning game two against East Texas Baptist, 3-1, then falling in the third and final game, 6-2, on Sunday at Worthington Field.
The Hornets produced stellar seasons in each of the past four years, which resulted in four NCAA Regional titles, two NCAA World Series appearances, and an NCAA World Series title. In three of the last four seasons, Lynchburg has notched at least 40 wins after not hitting that mark ever before in program history. The incredible senior class has rewritten the record books and cap off their collegiate career with a 166-41-1 overall record since 2023.
In the opener, Lynchburg responded after East Texas Baptist scored an unearned run in the first inning. The Hornets took the lead in the third when
Benton Jones walked and
Jack Pokorak doubled to center field.
Quinn Madden followed with a two-run single to left center, giving Lynchburg a 2-1 advantage.
The Hornets added an insurance run in the fifth.
Brandon Garcia doubled to right field and later stole third before scoring on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 3-1.
Lynchburg finished with eight hits and six walks. Garcia collected two hits and stole two bases, while Pokorak added two hits, including a double. Madden drove in both runs in the third inning, and Jones reached base three times with a hit and two walks.
On the mound,
Logan Tapman delivered a complete-game performance, allowing just one unearned run on four hits over nine innings while striking out three. He did not allow a walk and retired East Texas Baptist in order in the ninth to force a deciding game.
In the second game, Lynchburg again struck first.
Kyle Moshier led off the third inning with a solo home run to left field, and the Hornets added another run in the fifth when Jones doubled home Moshier for a 2-0 lead.
Nick Mattfield held East Texas Baptist scoreless through 6.2 innings before the Tigers broke through in the seventh. A passed ball allowed the tying run to score after a pair of baserunners reached, cutting the lead to 2-1.
East Texas Baptist took control in the eighth inning. Connor Massimini hit a solo home run to tie the game before Justin Flannery launched a three-run homer later in the inning. Kahne Nolen followed with another solo shot as the Tigers surged ahead 6-2.
Jones led Lynchburg offensively with two hits, including a double and an RBI, while Moshier added two hits and a home run. Mattfield allowed one unearned run over 6.2 innings in the no-decision, and
Colin McGuire was charged with the loss in relief.
Much to be proud about for Lynchburg this season, including a sweep of the ODAC major awards, the second-best winning percentage in program history, and numerous individual records.
