Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team completed the best-of-three series against Roanoke in the ODAC quarterfinal round with a 16-6 victory in seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Fox Field, effectively advancing to the ODAC championship weekend.
The Hornets wasted no time setting the tone, scoring three runs in the first inning.
Brandon Garcia worked a walk and
Benton Jones followed with an RBI double before
Jack Pokorak launched a two-run home run to right field to give Lynchburg an early 3-0 lead.
Lynchburg added three more runs in the second.
Gabriel Pegues opened the inning with a solo home run, and later Jones delivered an RBI single while Pokorak brought in another run on a fielder's choice to extend the advantage to 6-0. The Hornets continued to build in the third as
Kyle Flora doubled and
Ryder Warren followed with an RBI double, and Garcia added an RBI single to push the lead to 8-0.
Roanoke got on the board with a run in the fourth, but Lynchburg answered immediately when
Quinn Madden doubled and
Joe Munitz drove him in with a single to make it 9-1. The Hornets then broke the game open in the fifth with five runs on five hits and two errors. Jones delivered a two-run single, another run scored on an error, Pokorak added an RBI single, and
Sean Pokorak drew a bases-loaded walk to cap the inning.
Roanoke added three runs in the sixth, but the damage had already been done as Lynchburg maintained control the rest of the way. The Hornets finished with 14 runs on 17 hits. Jones led the way with four hits and four RBI, while
Jack Pokorak added two hits, including a home run, and four RBI. Garcia collected two hits and scored three times, and Munitz contributed three hits and an RBI.
On the mound,
Logan Tapman earned the win, allowing one run over five innings while striking out four.
Colin McGuire,
Austin Riney, and
Trent Judd combined in relief to close out the victory.
The Hornets will await for teams around the conference to finish today's contest before the bracket is finalized for the conference championship weekend. The first outings of the ODAC final four will begin on Thursday, May 7 with the championship concluding on Sunday, May 10 in Tysons, Va. at Capital One Park.
