Salisbury, Md. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) at Salisbury's Sea Gull Stadium on Sunday, fueled by Makayla Hargrove and Leigha Gronau's second goals of the season.
The Hornets dominated possession and outshot the Seahawks 24-1 in the neutral-site affair. Lynchburg directed 13 shots on target, while St. Mary's keeper Breanna Brown made 11 saves throughout the match.
Lynchburg fired five shots in the opening 10 minutes, though the Hornets didn't tally their opening goal until the 15th minute. Ally Hopkins sent a bouncing through ball beyond the St. Mary's backline, forcing the keeper off her line. Instead, Leigha Gronau sped past the defense to tap the ball past the keeper, scoring a wide-open goal.
Throughout the opening half, Lynchburg benefited from an array of opportunities but could not tally a second goal. The Hornets offered 11 shots during the first 45 minutes, including seven on-frame.
Julia Salo handled the Seahawks' lone chance of the game in the 44th minute, as St. Mary's fired a shot from distance following a corner kick.
In the second half, Makayla Hargrove popped the net in the 52nd minute to double the lead. Once again, Ally Hopkins generated the attack with a cross along the end line, which found the foot of Gronau. While her shot was deflected, Hargrove pounced on the rebound for an easy score.
Lynchburg maintained momentum to the finish line and collected eight corners in the second half. Kylie Cass relieved Salo between the pipes in the 73rd minute, helping the Hornets earn their third consecutive shutout.
Through four matches, Lynchburg constructed an 11-1 advantage over opponents and scored multiple goals in each match. The Hornets boast a 4-0 overall record to begin the season for the first time since 2017.
