Buena Vista, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's tennis team claimed a commanding 7-0 victory against Southern Virginia in its first regular-season competition of the 2026-27 season on Tuesday afternoon.
The Hornets secured the doubles point by winning two of the three matches.
Giovanni Garcia and
Rafhael Gastelu defeated Mason Pitcher and Spencer Knight 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Alvaro Quiroga and
Alexandre Gaboardi added a 7-5 victory over Trent McBride and Jeffrey Purcell in the No. 3 position.
Southern Virginia earned its doubles victory at No. 2, where Stephen Morgan and Mateo Molanphy defeated
Daniel Gomes and
Andres Ballerino 6-2. Lynchburg then won all six singles matches. Gastelu opened with a 6-0 first-set victory against Knight at No. 1 singles. Knight took the second set 6-4 before Gastelu won the deciding match tiebreak.
Garcia also needed a match tiebreak at No. 2. He won the opening set 6-3 against Morgan before Morgan claimed the second set 7-6. Garcia then secured the deciding tiebreak. The Hornets won each of the remaining four singles matches in straight sets. Gomes defeated Pitcher 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3, while Gaboardi recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Molanphy at No. 4.
Quiroga earned a 6-2, 6-1 win against McBride in the fifth position.
Francisco Ubeda completed the sweep at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Purcell.
The men's tennis squad has one more countable contest before the completion of the fall season against UVA Wise on Saturday, October 17 at 11 a.m. Prior to that, Lynchburg will scrimmage Roanoke in Salem, Va. on Tuesday, September 22 before heading to Fredericksburg, Va. on Friday, October 2 for the ITA Southeast Regional.
