Lynchburg, Va. -- Angel Romero became the hero for the University of Lynchburg men's soccer team as he knocked a header in sent from
Hector Rodriguez with 13 seconds remaining to lift the Hornets to a 2-1 victory over Hope on Saturday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.
The No. 10 Hornets (5-1-1) claimed their home-opening contest in exciting fashion. RV Hope (5-1-1) opened the scoring at 27:44 when Jackson Mindling recorded his fourth goal of the season. Ryker Corstange and Seth Walters were credited with assists. The Hornets equalized just before halftime.
William Casey scored his first goal of the season at 44:34, converting a pass from
Izaack Cruz to send the match into the break tied at 1-1.
Lynchburg took 12 of its 18 shots during the second half but remained level with Hope until the closing seconds. At 89:47, Romero scored his second goal of the season off an assist from
Hector Rodriguez to give the Hornets the 2-1 advantage.
Casey and
Fischer Daniel led Lynchburg with three shots apiece. Casey placed one attempt on goal, while Daniel put two on target.
Saul Lopez Coreas,
Sean DeLorenzo and
Carlos Andres Romero each recorded two shots and one attempt on goal.
Isaac Torres and
Matthew Viscuso each placed their lone shot on goal.
Bruno Rihl Silva,
Evan Pask,
Noah Coughlin and
Angel Romero also recorded one attempt apiece.
Lynchburg finished with an 18-7 advantage in total shots and a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. The Hornets held Hope to one shot during the second half.
Vikram Couto played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves. Hope goalkeeper Cooper Hutt recorded seven saves. The Hornets held 65 percent of the possession and earned all five corner kicks in the match. Lynchburg committed nine fouls and was called offside three times. Hope recorded seven fouls and one offside. Lynchburg received two yellow cards, while Hope did not receive a card.
The Hornets get right back at it tomorrow afternoon as they welcome Salisbury to Shellenberger Field on Sunday, September 20 at 2 p.m.
