Winchester, Va. --Â Leigha Gronau stamped the game-winning goal in the 68th minute as the University of Lynchburg toppled Shenandoah 1-0 to improve the Hornets' undefeated record to 7-0, a feat unmatched since the 2014 National Championship season.
While the Hornets were outshot for the first time this season, Lynchburg used its counter attack to net the lone goal. Julia Salo lifted the Hornets to their fifth shutout with a season-high five saves, despite Shenandoah's nine second-half shots.
Lynchburg dominated the set piece battle and secured a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Tonight's match marked the sixth consecutive game in which the Hornets won more corners than their opponent.
Neither squad impacted the scoreline in the opening 45 minutes, although both teams fired three shots. The final 17 minutes of the first half became an offensive struggle, as no shots were registered.
In a back and forth second half, the Hornets failed to connect on several through balls until Leigha Gronau found the game winner in the 68th minute.Â
Freshman Ally Hopkins clinched possession in the middle of the field, weaving a through ball between two converging defenders at the top of the box. Gronau tapped the ball past the incoming goalkeeper, creating an open goal for an easy shot.
With the score, Gronau upped her season total to three goals and tied the team lead. Hopkins' assist propelled her season tally to four through seven matches.
Shenandoah offered five shots throughout the final 13 minutes, although Lynchburg's defense weathered each opportunity. In the 87th minute, Salo made a decisive save just yards from the goal line, while the Hornets posted an additional team save on the rebound attempt.
Through the seven wins, Lynchburg scored multiple goals in six contests and won six matches away from home.
The Hornets return home on Saturday, Sept. 26 to celebrate Senior Day against Hollins at 3:00 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
