LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team earned a 3-0 victory over Sewanee on Sunday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.

The Hornets wasted little time getting on the board, as Grace Peterson opened the scoring in the first quarter off an assist from Sydney Cappallo. Lynchburg continued to create opportunities throughout the opening period, with Taylor Secrist and Allie Freeman both getting shots away as the Hornets carried the early advantage.

Lynchburg increased the pressure in the second quarter, recording eight shots in the period while holding Sewanee without an attempt. Sydney Cappallo and Sofia Boon each tested goalkeeper Miriam Hussaini early in the frame before Secrist continued to generate chances around the cage. The Hornets eventually doubled their lead when Callie Short finished an opportunity following a Secrist shot on goal, giving Lynchburg a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime. 

The Hornets remained on the front foot after the break. Secrist nearly extended the advantage in the third quarter when her attempt struck the post, while Peterson followed with another shot shortly afterward. Neither side was able to find the cage in the period, keeping Lynchburg's two-goal lead intact entering the final frame.

Sewanee created its strongest stretch of offensive pressure in the fourth quarter, recording four shots and earning three penalty corners. Shay Schoones was equal to the challenge in goal, turning away three shots during the period to preserve the shutout.

Lynchburg added another insurance goal in the fourth quarter as Boon found the back of the cage off Cappallo's second assist of the afternoon. The Hornets continued to press after the goal, generating several more penalty corners and shots before closing out the 3-0 victory.

Lynchburg finished the afternoon with an 18-5 advantage in shots and placed 11 attempts on goal compared with four for Sewanee. The Hornets also held an 8-5 edge in penalty corners. Secrist led Lynchburg with eight shots, including four on goal, while Schoones finished with four saves to record the shutout. Cappallo tallied two assists in the victory.

The Hornets turn to the road next weekend for an ODAC affair in Ashland, Va. against Randolph-Macon on Saturday, Oct. 3.
