Women's Volleyball Nipped In Five-Set Thriller Vs. Batten

Lynchburg, Va. -- In a narrow five-set bout, the University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team fell just short against Batten on Wednesday night in Turner Gymnasium.

The RV Hornets (12-2, 3-2 ODAC) won the opening set 25-20 before the No. 22 Marlins (13-2, 2-2) responded with victories of 25-21 and 25-23 in the second and third frames. Lynchburg forced a deciding set by taking the fourth 26-24, but Batten closed the match with a 15-13 victory.

Played in front of hundreds of fans for the squad's Code Red contest, the match featured 21 ties and eight lead changes. The Hornets produced 66 kills and hit .214 across the five sets. Lynchburg recorded 16 kills with four errors for a .333 hitting percentage in the opening frame. The Hornets added 15 kills in the third set and nine in the fifth.

Kate Hardie and Cambre Phillips shared the team lead with 15 kills apiece. Hardie hit .250 and added three service aces, eight digs and two block assists. Phillips finished with nine digs and one block assist.

Ava Meinhardt recorded 14 kills with three errors on 26 attacks for a team-best .423 hitting percentage. She also contributed two solo blocks and two block assists. Leah DiNardo added 12 kills, one solo block and two block assists.

Kenstin Phelps directed Lynchburg's offense with 50 assists. Phelps also collected 14 digs, two kills, two service aces and one block assist. Mia Hinkamper led the Hornets defensively with 21 digs and added five assists.

Tori Williamson totaled 12 digs, seven kills and two aces, while Emma Cash served two aces. Lynchburg finished with 59 assists, nine service aces, 70 digs and seven total blocks.
Batten recorded 55 kills, hit .220 and finished with 74 digs and 11 blocks. Hannah Smith led the visitors with 21 kills and 18 digs.
