Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late-Game Goal Allows No. 14 Lynchburg To Triumph Over Texas Lutheran

Segun, Texas -- After both sides scored in the first 15 minutes of action, some late heroics from the attacking unit and Chris Wiley allowed the University of Lynchburg men's soccer team to claim a 2-1 victory over Texas Lutheran on Friday night at Gustafson Field.

Noah Coughlin opened the scoring for the No. 14 Hornets (2-0) in the sixth minute. Coughlin scored his first goal of the season at 5:38, with William Casey providing the assist. Texas Lutheran (0-2) answered at 12:07 when Alex Isaacson scored an unassisted goal, sending the match into halftime tied at 1-1.

The score remained even until Chris Wiley delivered the deciding goal at 83:39. After a throw in from the left side landed in the center of the goalkeeper's area, the Hornet attackers applied pressure on the Bulldogs' netminder until Wiley put it past the keeper for the game-deciding goal. Lynchburg held Texas Lutheran without another shot over the final minutes to complete the victory.

The Hornets finished with a 21-5 advantage in total shots and placed 11 attempts on goal. Lynchburg recorded eight shots in the first half before adding 13 after halftime. Texas Lutheran took two shots in the opening half and three in the second.

Isaac Torres, William Casey and Fischer Daniel led Lynchburg with three shots apiece. Torres placed one attempt on goal, while Daniel had two shots on target. Ayden Cass recorded two shots on goal. Jefferson Lopez Coreas, Carlos Andres Romero and Chris Bovo each took two shots and placed one on target. Bruno Rihl Silva also recorded a shot on goal.

Vikram Couto played all 90 minutes in goal for Lynchburg and made three saves. He stopped one shot in the first half and two in the second. Texas Lutheran goalkeeper Ernesto Avila recorded eight saves, while the Bulldogs received one team save.

Lynchburg held 55 percent of the possession and earned all three corner kicks in the match. The Hornets were called for 15 fouls, compared with 14 for the Bulldogs, and were ruled offside three times. Each team received one yellow card, and neither side was issued a red card.

The men's soccer team remains in the Lone Star State for its next game on Sunday against Southwestern in Georgetown, Texas at 11 a.m. CST (12 p.m. EST).
